Carbon Emissions

Plants grow, die, and decompose in a normal cycle. As they grow, they take in carbon dioxide, some going into the plants above ground and some being permanently sequestered in the roots and soils. When they die and decompose, they give off carbon dioxide and other gasses, such as methane, all contributing to climate change. Properly combusting that dead biomass controls the carbon emissions and eliminates the methane, greatly reducing the most aggressive greenhouse gasses while leaving the sequestered carbon in place. Therefore, biomass is considered carbon neutral. (eia.doe.gov)
